The Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances is the most detailed picture of what American families own and owe. Here are its figures by age, and a calculator to see where you stand.
Median net worth by age, 2025
Half of families have more, half less
Federal Reserve, Survey of Consumer Finances 2025, Table 4.
In short
In the Federal Reserve's 2025 Survey of Consumer Finances, the median US family had a net worth of $216,100, and the average was about $1.23 million. By the age of the head of household, median net worth was $32,820 under 35, $156,000 at 35 to 44, $254,670 at 45 to 54, $411,340 at 55 to 64, $431,900 at 65 to 74 and $504,600 at 75 and over. The median is the better guide for most people, because the average is pulled up by the wealthiest families.

Reading the numbers
Averages are dragged up by a small number of very wealthy families. The median is the family in the middle.
For all US families, the average net worth in 2025 was about $1.23 million and the median was $216,100. That gap is not a mistake: a few families with tens of millions pull the average far above what a typical family has. If you compare yourself with the average, almost everyone looks behind.
A benchmark tells you where you stand against strangers with different incomes, costs of living and luck. Your own net worth, checked every month, tells you whether your money is moving in the right direction, which is the part you can do something about.
Student loans can put net worth below zero in your twenties even when you are doing everything right. What matters is that the figure rises as the loans fall and savings grow.
