YNAB alternative

A free YNAB alternative, and an honest comparison.

YNAB teaches a method: give every dollar a job before you spend it. If that method works for you, keep it. If you mainly want to budget by category, see where your money goes and track your net worth, NetWorth+ does that for free, without a bank login.

In short

NetWorth+ is a free alternative to YNAB for iPhone and Android. It budgets by category, tracks net worth, credit cards, loans and shared bills, and never connects to your bank. It does not use YNAB's zero-based method, where every dollar is assigned before you spend it; if that method is why you use YNAB, YNAB is the better choice. YNAB costs $109 a year. NetWorth+ is free, with Pro at $49.99 a year.

Being fair

What YNAB does better

YNAB's method is the product, and for a lot of people it works.

Assigning every dollar before you spend it changes how people think about money, and YNAB's guides and workshops are built around teaching it. NetWorth+ does not teach a method. It shows you the picture and leaves the rules to you.

YNAB can also import from your bank if you choose to link it. NetWorth+ never will, so you add transactions yourself, import a CSV, or type them to Numo.

Which one fits you

  • Choose YNAB if you want a strict method and are happy to pay for it
  • Choose NetWorth+ if you want budgets, net worth and shared bills in one free app, without linking a bank

Questions

Good to know

Is there a free YNAB alternative?
NetWorth+ has a free plan with no time limit: budgets by category, net worth, credit cards, loans and shared bills, with up to 5 accounts. Pro is $49.99 a year in the US.
Can NetWorth+ do zero-based budgeting?
Not as a method. You set a budget per category and see what is left; there is no step where every dollar has to be assigned first.
Can I move my data from YNAB?
YNAB lets you export your transactions as a CSV file, and NetWorth+ can import it: pick the file and tap which column is the date, the amount and the description.
Does NetWorth+ link to my bank?
No. It never asks for a bank login.
Can my partner and I both use it?
Yes. Each of you uses NetWorth+ on your own phone, and you can split shared bills and share an account's balance read-only.
